The Producer’s Pick is a story that among all of the other great stories we’ve told stands out to a TPI producer. For me “Behind the Mask” is one of those stories. It was an honor to be an Executive Producer on this documentary. I remember when the idea of producing an in-depth story on prostitution in South Africa was first presented to me. I had seen stories on prostitution in the past and wondered if there was a new story to tell. But when I heard that some were pushing to legalize prostitution in time for the World Cup, I knew this was a story we had to tell. While prostitution remains illegal in South Africa, it continues to be a divisive issue. In this story we hear from different sides of the argument: those who support legalizing what they call “sex work”, those who say such “abuse” should not be tolerated, and those who are trapped in the middle.
